What Is the Red Seal Program?

The Red Seal Program (also called the Interprovincial Standards Program) is Canada's national certification system for skilled trades. A Red Seal endorsement on your Certificate of Qualification means your skills have been assessed against a national standard — and that your certification is recognized in every Canadian province and territory without re-examination.

The program is administered by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) in partnership with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and the provincial/territorial apprenticeship authorities. As of 2026, there are over 50 designated Red Seal trades in Canada.

Why the Red Seal Matters

How the Red Seal Exam Works

Each Red Seal exam consists of 100–130 multiple-choice questions based on the trade's Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) — the national document that defines what a journeyperson in that trade must know. Most exams require a minimum score of 70% to pass. Exam time is typically 3 hours.

The RSOS is updated every few years to reflect changes in technology, regulations, and industry practice. This site's practice questions are based on the 2023 RSOS — the current version for all 8 trades covered.

How to Register for the Red Seal Exam

The Red Seal exam is administered provincially — you apply through your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority, not directly to the federal government. The general process is:

  1. Complete your apprenticeship hours and in-school training periods in your province.
  2. Apply to write the journeyperson exam through your provincial authority (Alberta Apprenticeship, SkilledTradesBC, Skilled Trades Ontario, etc.).
  3. Pass the provincial exam — in most provinces this IS the Red Seal exam, not a separate test.
  4. Red Seal endorsement is added to your Certificate of Qualification automatically upon passing.
