About the 306A Red Seal Exam — Sheet Metal Worker

The 306A Sheet Metal Worker Red Seal exam is Canada's national certification for sheet metal tradespeople working in HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation, architectural sheet metal, industrial exhaust systems, and commercial building envelope work. Red Seal 306A certification is recognized in all provinces and territories.

The exam consists of approximately 100 multiple-choice questions based on the current Red Seal Occupational Standard, requiring a minimum score of 70%. Exam time is 3 hours. The exam tests hands-on trade knowledge, not just code recall — expect questions requiring calculation and layout reasoning.

Exam Strategy for 306A

Pattern development is your most valuable study area. At 20% of the exam, it's where candidates lose or gain the most marks. Practice constructing all three pattern types from scratch. Draw out the development for a 45° offset rectangular-to-round transition using triangulation — if you can do that, you can handle any exam question on layout.

Memorize the SMACNA pressure class table. Every duct construction decision (gauge, reinforcement, support, seam type) flows from the pressure class. Know the six classes (½, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10" WC), when each is used, and how positive vs. negative pressure affects construction requirements.

Seam selection is applied knowledge. The exam will describe a duct condition (round, rectangular, positive pressure, insulated, architectural) and ask which seam is appropriate. Build a mental matrix: Pittsburgh = rectangular duct longitudinal seam; grooved = round spiral; standing seam = architectural; drive/S cleat = transverse connection.
