* Passing score for all Red Seal exams: 70%. Exam format: computer-based multiple choice.

Step-by-Step: How to Register for the Red Seal Exam

Step 1 — Complete Your Apprenticeship or Required Work Hours

You must have completed the required number of on-the-job training hours and any mandatory technical training (school) for your trade. Requirements vary by province, typically 6,000–9,000 hours over 3–5 years. Your employer must sign off on your hours.

Step 2 — Apply Through Your Provincial Authority

Contact your provincial apprenticeship office (see contacts below) to submit your application. You'll need proof of work experience, your apprenticeship records, and government-issued ID. Some provinces allow online application.

Step 3 — Pay the Exam Fee & Receive Authorization

Exam fees range from $100–$250 CAD depending on province. Once approved, you receive an exam authorization number. Some provinces require you to book through Pearson VUE or an authorized testing center.

Step 4 — Book Your Exam Date & Location

Choose a testing center near you and select your preferred date. Testing centers are located in most major cities and many smaller towns across Canada. Exams are available year-round at most locations.

Step 5 — Prepare & Write the Exam

Study the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) for your trade — available free at red-seal.ca. Use this site's practice questions and Mock Exam mode to simulate real exam conditions. The exam is computer-based and results are usually available immediately or within a few days.

Step 6 — Receive Your Red Seal Certificate

If you score 70% or higher, your provincial trade certificate will be endorsed with the Red Seal emblem. This certifies you to work in your trade across all participating Canadian provinces and territories.

What to Bring on Exam Day

✅ Required — Bring These

❌ NOT Allowed — Leave These at Home

💡 Tip: Arrive at least 15–20 minutes early. Late arrivals may be turned away. Bring a light jacket — testing centers are often air-conditioned. You'll be provided scratch paper and a pen if needed.

Exam Day Tips — From People Who've Been There

🕐 Time management: The exam is 120–135 questions in 3–4 hours, which gives you about 1.5–2 minutes per question. Don't spend too long on any one question — flag it and come back at the end.
📖 Read every option: Red Seal questions are designed so that multiple answers can seem correct. Always read all four options before choosing. The "best" answer is often about applying the correct standard or procedure, not just a technically correct fact.
🧠 Focus on your weak blocks: After any mock exam, use the topic breakdown report to identify your weakest blocks. Spend the final week before your exam drilling those specific areas.
📐 Know your standards: Questions are based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS). Many questions test your knowledge of when and why specific codes, regulations, or standards apply — not just how to do the task. Download the RSOS for your trade free from red-seal.ca.
🌙 Night before: Don't study for more than 1 hour the night before. Get 7–8 hours of sleep. Your brain consolidates memory during sleep. Cramming the night before rarely improves scores and often increases anxiety.

What Happens After You Pass?

Immediate Results

Most provinces provide your pass/fail result immediately at the testing center. A detailed score report showing performance by topic block is usually available within 1–5 business days through your provincial authority's online portal.

Receiving Your Certificate

Your provincial trade certificate with the Red Seal endorsement is typically mailed within 4–8 weeks. Some provinces offer digital certificates. Keep multiple copies of your certificate in a safe location.

Working Across Canada

With your Red Seal, you can work in your trade in any participating province or territory without additional testing. Simply contact the provincial authority of the province you're moving to and provide your certificate — they will register you without requiring you to rewrite the exam.

What if You Fail?

Receiving your topic-by-topic score breakdown is key. Focus your additional study on the lowest-scoring blocks. Most provinces allow you to retake after 30–90 days. Use this site's topic filter to drill the specific areas where you scored below 70%.

💡 Tip: If you fail, request your full result report from your provincial authority. The block-by-block breakdown tells you exactly where to focus — use our topic tabs in practice mode to target those specific areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to complete an apprenticeship to write the Red Seal exam?
Not necessarily. Some provinces allow "trade qualifier" or "equivalent experience" pathways where you demonstrate the required number of hours of work experience without a formal apprenticeship agreement. Requirements vary significantly by province and trade — contact your provincial authority to confirm your eligibility.
How many times can I attempt the Red Seal exam?
There is no national limit on attempts. Each province sets its own rules on waiting periods between attempts (typically 30–90 days). You must re-register and pay the exam fee for each attempt.
Does my Red Seal certificate expire?
The Red Seal certificate itself does not expire. However, some provincial trade certificates may require periodic renewal. Check with your provincial authority for any ongoing requirements in your trade.
Can I use the Red Seal to work in the United States?
The Red Seal is a Canadian program and is not directly recognized in the US. However, having a Red Seal certification can strengthen a US immigration or work permit application by demonstrating qualified trade credentials. US state licensing requirements vary significantly by trade and state.
Are there study materials provided by the government?
Yes. The Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) for each trade is available free of charge at red-seal.ca. This document outlines all the skills and knowledge tested on the exam — it's the official exam blueprint. Some provincial authorities also offer their own study guides.
What is the Red Seal pass rate?
Pass rates vary by trade and province, but nationally about 70–75% of candidates pass on their first attempt. Candidates who complete structured study with practice questions and mock exams typically have significantly higher pass rates than those who rely on work experience alone.
