About the 310T Red Seal Exam — Truck & Transport Mechanic

The 310T Truck and Transport Mechanic Red Seal exam is Canada's nationally recognized certification for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and transport equipment. Passing the 310T gives you an Interprovincial Red Seal endorsement — meaning your ticket is recognized in every Canadian province and territory without re-examination.

The exam consists of 130 multiple-choice questions based on the 2023 Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS), requiring a minimum score of 70% to pass. You have 3 hours to complete the exam.

Topic Breakdown (2023 RSOS)

• Air Brake Systems (~25%) — The largest and most important block. Covers CVSA Level 1 inspections, S-cam and disc brake adjustment, dual-circuit air systems, ABS/ATC, glad hands, and brake fade. Many candidates underestimate this section — it's heavily weighted and highly practical.
• Diesel Engine Systems (~20%) — Fuel injection (common-rail, HEUI), EGR, DPF/DEF aftertreatment, turbocharger operation, cooling systems, and engine diagnostics. Expect J1939 fault codes.
• Electrical & Electronic Systems (~18%) — CAN bus (J1939/J1587), multiplexing, chassis wiring, ABS module diagnostics, telematics, and 12V/24V systems. Wiring diagrams appear frequently.
• Drivetrain & Wheels (~18%) — Manual and automatic transmissions (Allison, Eaton Fuller), rear axle differentials, driveshaft angles, tire sizing/inflation (TPMS), and wheel-end bearings.
• DOT Compliance & Safety (~12%) — Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspection levels, Hours of Service regulations, dangerous goods placarding (TDG), pre-trip/post-trip inspection requirements.
• Cab & Body Systems (~7%) — HVAC, electrical accessories, sleeper systems, fifth-wheel and kingpin specs, and coupling procedures.

Exam Strategy for 310T

Air brakes first. With 25% of the exam dedicated to air brake systems, spending extra study time here has the highest return. Understand the dual-circuit system, CVSA out-of-service criteria, and brake timing standards cold.

Know your fault codes. J1939 fault code structure (SPN/FMI) appears in several questions — know what the parameters mean, not just the code numbers. Questions often describe a symptom and ask you to identify the cause based on live data.

DOT regs are pass/fail knowledge. The compliance section is rule-based — either you know the regulation or you don't. Memorize HOS exceptions, CVSA inspection levels, and TDG placard weight thresholds.
